(CREATION SCIENCE,
NATURE STUDY)
The apostle Paul mentions false science to a young minister in 1Timothy 6:20, 21,
"O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain
babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have
erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen."
As far as traditional textbooks go, we have used both Rod and Staff and ABeka texts in
elementary as "starting points" then branched off in our study of nature with other resources.
We have also enjoyed BJU science texts for jr. high and high school with the student activity
worktexts. We have recently begun using Apologia Science. As a family, we have particularly
enjoyed having birdfeeders, doing home landscaping, and gardening.
A site for listening to bird songs and even has a quiz is found at
http://www.nhest.org/birdguid.html. Sorry - This site has no pictures.
Nature Study is a life long adventure, and a site recently recommended for identifying trees is
http://www.oplin.org/tree/index.html.
Our favorite section is "Identify by Common Name."
Scroll down to see the beautiful photos of the tree size, bark, and flower and to read the
helpful description. I was told that the trees listed are from the Ohio area but can be found
elsewhere. Grade level: Elementary & Middle School.
Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock and various Field Guides have been
helpful in the study of nature, as well as Nature Readers by Christian Liberty Press and
Rod and Staff's Nature Book to Color.
"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handiwork."
Psalm 19:1
Christian Liberty Nature Reader, Books 1-5 for grades 1-5. Beautiful illustrations;
texts also include review questions to help evaluate reading comprehension.
See the Nature Workshop site http://naturesworkshopplus.com
for good resource materials
and science equipment. See Unlocking the Mysteries of Creation by Dennis Peterson.
"Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him." Psalm 33:8
Apologia Science by Dr. Jay L. Wile for jr. high and high school from Apologia Educational
Ministries, Inc. http://www.highschoolscience.com/.
Courses include General Science,
Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Advanced Biology, and Advanced Chemistry
and are available for independent study or as Internet courses. CD programs are available,
too. The new Young Explorers Series has 2 books we know of - one about astronomy; the
other about botony; these are for elementary age children. See their website for new products.
For discounted prices see Home School Super Center.
Institute for Creation Research is a Christ-centered ministry where science and the Bible are
fully integrated. Visit their online store at http://www.icr.org/ for such books
as Many Infallible Proofs, Scientific Creationism, 2nd edition, and Men of Science Men of
God by Dr. Henry Morris, Evolution: the Fossils Still Say No and Teaching Creation Science
in the Public Schools by Dr. Duane Gish, The Great Dinosaur Mystery: and the Bible by
Paul Taylor, Darwin on Trial by Phillip Johnson, Seven Men Who Rule the World from the
Grave by Dave Breese, Genesis and the Decay of Nations by Ken Ham and many more.
We especially recommend the video "Mount St. Helens: Explosive Evidence for Catastrophe"
narrated by Dr. Steve Austin. Please take time to search this site for books and audio/visual
materials for your family.
Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."
Acts 17:24, "God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord
of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;"
John 1:1-3, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made
by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made."
John 1:10, "He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world
knew him not."
Did you know there is an outstanding Creation Museum in Crosbyton, Texas? A statement
about the museum is that it's an "exhibit (of) the collection of Mr. Taylor's discoveries and
reproductions of dinosaur, mammoth and other types of paleontological artifacts. These exhibits
are presented with a 'Creation-Friendly' point of view, with data and observations that support it."
Visit their website at http://www.mtblanco.com/. (great field trip possibilities!)
There is also an Answers in Genesis Creation Museum under construction
in Petersburg, Kentucky near Cincinnati, Ohio. For more information see
http://www.answersingenesis.org/museum/about.asp.

Considering God's Creation and Science in the Creation Week have both been recommended
to me. We have enjoyed BJU science texts for studying science and for reference, too.
"If I have ever made any valuable discoveries, it has been owing more to patient attention,
than to any other talent. " -- Isaac Newton
The water cycle is evident in Ecclesiastes 1:7, "All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea
is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again."
A round earth is evident in Isaiah 40:22, "It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth,
and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers..."
Water currents or paths in the oceans and seas are described in Psalm 8:8, "The fowl
of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas."
Hibernation is found in Job 37:8, "Then the beasts go into dens, and remain in their places."
Migration is found in Job 39:26, "Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings
toward the south?
The lion is "king of beasts." Proverbs 30:30 says, "A lion which is strongest among beasts,
and turneth not away for any;"
Worker ants are female. Proverbs 6:6 says, "Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways,
and be wise:"
Among other things, Proverbs 30:33 tells how butter is made, "Surely the
churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth
forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.
Another good analogy about strife is found in Proverbs 26:20, "Where no wood
is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth."
Ecclesiastes 10:1 says, "Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a
stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour."
Wouldn't it make an interesting science experiment to reproduce this smell and teach
this character lesson? One with an honorable reputation who acts foolishly is like a healing
ointment that stinks because of dead flies. Of what use would it be? Matthew 5:13 says,
"Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted?
it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men."
Colossians 3:17 teaches, "And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of
the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him."
The Character Sketches, Volumes I, II, and III teach interesting facts of nature with
detailed descriptions and beautiful illustrations along with good character qualities. See at

The principle of "sowing seed" is found in 2 Corinthians 9:6, "But this I say, He which soweth
sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also
bountifully." Galatians 6:7-9 says, "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a
man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap
corruption but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us
not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not."
Ecclesiastes 11:1 says, "Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days."
Ephesians 6:8 says, "Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same
shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free."
Colossians 3:25 says, "But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath
done: and there is no respect of persons."
Luke 6:31 says, "And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise."

We also recommend the delightful children's storybook with underlying theme of
creation vs. evolution, Yellow & Pink by William Steig.
Parables from Nature by Mrs. Gatty. We have enjoyed our printout copy but edited the
story about honey bees so that the worker bees are referred to as "she" not "he." (not that
political correctness is a concern, but worker bees are female) It can be read online at
http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/gatty/parables/parables.html.
Years ago a prediction being embraced even by some Christians on my college campus
was that the seasons would merge and become indistinguishable before the Lord's return.
The following verse dispels that idea: "While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest,
and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease." Genesis 8:22
The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann Wyss is a children's classic that would lend
itself to interesting nature study because of the numerous plants and animals described
in it; and another recommended book especially for boys about wilderness survival is
Cache Lake Country: Life in the North Woods by John J. Rowlands. Normal disclaimers apply.
